Essential Oils- My Favorites & How I Use Them

Essential oils are something I got into when I was a teen, I was interested in natural ways to improve my health. I have been using essential oils in a variety of ways since then and I’ll give a short list of my favorites below->

1. Natural fragrance

I, like many, want to smell good. However, I can’t get behind using artificial fragrances as they mess with normal hormone function. So, using essential oils in my body and home products is my work-around. I like to buy products like body lotion, candles, soap, and laundry detergent that are only scented with essential oils and natural fragrances.

2. Aromatherapy

If I have learned anything as a teacher it’s this: a room full of pre-teens and teenagers can get stinky. This is especially true if they’ve gone outside a few times and ran around. I don’t use plug-ins or room sprays, so my essential oil diffuser is an indispensable part of my classroom. I like using light, clean scents like eucalyptus or peppermint and pre-made blends that say things like “stress-ease”, “calm”, or “happiness”. I also like to have my students involved in picking the scent for the day. I hate nothing more than going into a smelly room and trying to get work done, and I know my students feel the same. This way, I can feel good about keeping chemicals and fragrances out of my room and make an inviting atmosphere.

3. Cleaning

I try my best to use natural products in my home. That being said, if I need bleach I will use bleach. This margin leaves plenty of room for safe, effective cleaning products that I can feel good about. I’ve tried many different products and I’m still working through what I (and my budget!) prefer. I like brands such as: Mrs. Meyers, Seventh Generation, and Rosey by Thrive Market.

4. Personal Care

When it comes to personal care products (makeup, skincare, haircare, etc.) I like to keep it clean and simple. I’m not to the point where I make all my own products, but I will do a DIY here and there. In reference to my post on makeup, I like the brands ILIA, Mad Hippie, and Beauty By Earth. For skincare, I’m always trying out products from the natural section at my local grocery store. I’ve been using a night and day set of lotions from Derma E in combination with my homemade tallow balm (usually using frankincense for skin health). When it comes to body wash, I’m partial to a bar soap scented with essential oils.
